Every professional association, regardless of size or scope, must have a set of bylaws that their members, and specifically their board, must adhere to. The bylaws should also be freely available for download on the association\u2019s website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ltymfqmc-a7e66dfd12d3c3a0f73a2f3629a0358f '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>Purpose of Bylaws<\/h2>\n<p>Every professional association&nbsp;in Canada must abide by regulations set out in the <a href=\"http:\/\/laws.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/c-7.75\/\" target=\"_blank\">Not-For-Profit Act<\/a>, and other similar acts. These are regulations that are mandated by the government. Bylaws, on the other hand, are internal laws that an association creates itself.<\/p>\n<p>In general, professional associations have a great deal of freedom in how they want to set up their bylaws. Whilst, for example, every association must have a <a href=\"\/professional-associations\/board-elections\/board\">board of directors<\/a>, the size and composition of the board is at the bylaw\u2019s discretion. Having clear, freely available bylaws is vitalfor the efficient and legal management of&nbsp;an association. Bylaws ensure that there are certain rules and principles that must be adhered to, and ensures that there are limits to the board\u2019s power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ltymg7xp-b78053bb5458bc6df78350d079a20a72 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>Content of Professional Association Bylaws<\/h2>\n<p>No two sets of professional association bylaws will look exactly alike, but there is normally a similar structure. At the very least, your bylaws should cover the following issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which type of elections your college will hold<\/li>\n<li>The positions that require elections<\/li>\n<li>The nomination process<\/li>\n<li>The manner in which your election will be held (i.e. online, post, in person)<\/li>\n<li>The duration of the election<\/li>\n<li>Whether different membership groups have different voting rights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>POLYAS strongly recommends that you ensure that your bylaws allow online voting.
